Thisgraduation project that explores the boundaries of acceptable policy change through three redesign scenarios. Its objective is to create and evaluate values-based models for the transformation of built heritage. The MSc3 Graduation Studio: Revitalising Heritage comprises three key phases: a survey to assess cultural significance, a values-driven redesign process, and a heritage impact assessment. Initially, existing policies were examined, followed by a gamified survey comparing the perspectives of two distinct target groups: the community and experts. The design proposal presents three options, ranging from conservative to substantial alterations, for heritage housing. To assess the effectiveness of the methodology, a SWOT analysis was conducted to analyze the project's impact. Overall, this graduation project aims to provide insights into the potential for change in heritage redesign while considering the cultural significance and stakeholder perspectives.

This paper describes the method followed in the intervention project
following the analysis of façade attributes and value in the neighborhood of Sao
Francisco in Faro, Portugal. It is composed of three main parts: Research results,
Intervention bases and architectonic project. Following the work described on
the research (Herck, van et al. 2022), the paper aims to describe the topic of Value
based redesign for heritage in architecture. As described in the previous paper,
the framework for the values is set by Tarrafa and Pereira Roders (2012). These
values attached to façade attributes set the tone for the intervention along with
principles coming from the masterplan for Barrio Sao Francisco and a systematic
intervention. Following the value analysis, the current state of the building
and the damage it currently presents was mapped and compared with the value
plans. The results of the overlaying of information pointed out the challenges,
opportunities, and dilemmas in the ensemble. The architectonic proposal feeds
from the façade analysis and portrays a system of principles that convey with
local regulations, materials and values. The method can be further developed
and refined with the possibility of having a broader input from research.

Society conveys values to cities and their buildings, the key to sustainability, only in part recognized as heritage values, when protected by urban and/or heritage planning. There is a growing recognition of the importance of acknowledging the values conveyed by locals and tourists in heritage management and urban planning. However, the knowledge and tools available today remain predominantly expert-based. Their contribution to heritage listings and conservation plans is therefore limited. Moreover, some cities tend to unbalance locals and tourists’ needs, leading to overly touristic areas, gentrification and communities’ exodus. Although research on the values conveyed to cities and buildings is growing, there is seldom research comparing them. Hence, how do the attributes and values of Faro’s heritage conveyed by locals and tourists set the frame for transformation? This research aims to reveal the cultural significance (values and attributes) conveyed by locals and tourists, taking the neighborhood São Francisco (included in an Urban Rehabilitation Area) in Faro, Portugal, as case study. And will provide a masterplan as a visualisation of the results gathered by this research. The guidelines provided by the masterplan address the current challenges of the neighbourhood further than the actual policies in place. By using multiple methods to perform spatial analysis, which includes (1) photographing, mapping and categorization of the facades and their attributes in São Francisco, and, (2) social media analysis, where hundred Instagram posts were manually collected following strict guidelines, heritage attributes could be identified. (3) Public engagement was used in the site survey game in which pictures of the attributes would be shown to locals and tourists who would connect predefined words to them in order to collect the heritage values. By following these methods, this research aims at revealing patterns and relations between: a) attributes, in particular, buildings’ facades and their characteristics and b) values (distinguishing local and tourists). After the fieldwork, results showed clear concurrences and contradictions between both communities. Results revealed low values for contemporary apartment complexes and higher values for pre-existing typologies in both groups. Furthermore, attributes such as the street art, the materialisation of facades, and the authenticity of attributes developed into design guidelines for a masterplan in which these relations are portrayed. By understanding these relations, the Municipality of Faro can improve their awareness of who values what, and why, in order to support their strategies about how to accommodate new functions in historic buildings while respecting the limits of acceptable change of built heritage according to these stakeholders. Hence, the expected impact is to raise awareness about the cultural significance of both societal groups in order to better inform heritage management and urban sustainable planning.

By conducting co-creation workshops using digital games together with expert interviews a well-considered redesign of the Prinsenhof Museum ensemble in Delft was made. The new design consists of a new, partly underground museum together with a cultural hub of Delft.

The research booklet presents the topic chosen for the graduation year of the masters of Architecture & Heritage at the Technical University of Delft. The first two quarters of the graduation year were set up as a research phase, which was used as the starting point for the design phase of the second half of the year. “Heritage 4all: Univer-Cities” was chosen as the graduation studio. The focus of this graduation studio lies on the following four themes: Co-creation, sustainability, univer-cities and digital heritage. The involvement of stakeholders is of paramount importance to know what the citizens values and what their necessities are. Therefore the research question is the following: ‘how a co-creation approach can be applied for redesigning 20th century Industrial Heritage factories for adaptive reuse together with stakeholders?’ For the stakeholders involvement Minecraft is used as the heritage game to explore if it could be supporting the value assessment of the Kabelfabriek II. Other case studies (e.g. Westergasfabriek, DRU Industriepark, Stanley Mills, King’s Cross and The Tobacco factory of Madrid) were studied to find out how to make the Kabelfabriek II sustainable in terms of energy efficiency and social inclusivity. Furthermore sixteen interviews were held, both with expert and non-expert stakeholders. The old, partly abandoned, cable factory at the Schieoevers in Delft was chosen as the case study for this research and was redesigned in the second half of this graduation year. The cable factory, in Dutch called De Kabelfabriek II, is one of the factories of the former called NKF company. When discussing the cable factory in this research paper, Kabelfabriek II at Schieweg 15 in Delft is meant. It is not listed as a monument, however it is part of Delft’s industrial heritage. The city of Delft used to be known for its industry. Yet because of de-industrialization this image of Delft as an industrial city has changed. The design process and final design can be read in the design booklet “Kabelfabriek 2.0 – Working and living cabled in the factory”.

This research looks at Gele Scheikunde - a TU Delft chemistry department building constructed in 1945. The complex served for educational purposes until 2012 and then was sold by TU for redevelopment.
The ambition of the city of Delft is to increase the housing stock, furthermore, the number of TU campus users has grown significantly in recent years. This brings up a dilemma between densification and quality of life. For these reasons, abandoned or non-used buildings like TU faculty building Gele Scheikunde is envisioned for housing purpose. According to the official regulations and the Commission for Environmental Impact Assessment (MER), there is great potential in this university area to develop an innovative sustainable neighbourhood. Thus, the question that arises is: How to redevelop the former campus buildings?
The goal is to research on how to cope with abandoned campus buildings by including social and ecological values into the transformation and re-adaption design. The approach for the research was to involve stakeholders in the co-creation process. This co-creation process was facilitated through the Minecraft workshop. During the workshop, not only experts (e.g. architects, designers, planners) but also external parties (e.g. neighbours, users, ecologists), decided over the built environment. However, a co-creation approach is not limited to one method. There are various ways to involve stakeholders: interviews, surveys, questionnaires and workshops, with or without heritage games. For this research, a combination of the above was chosen: interviews, surveys and a gaming workshop with Minecraft.
This approach provided information on what is valued in the case study, why it is valued, what should be kept and what can be demolished. Besides all stakeholders shared their opinion on what would be the best “new program”.
