Bolted connections are one of the key connection configurations in steel structures. The ductile fracture prediction is one of the challenges in the structural integrity evaluating of steel structures. To guarantee the safety of steel bridge in connections, an accurate assessment of the ultimate resistance of high-strength bolts under combined tensile-shear loads is necessary. However, the impacts of various parameters on high-strength bolts under combined tensile-shear loads are not sufficiently analysed in the existing references. Hence, in this paper, the validated mesoscale critical equivalent plastic strain (MCEPS) method is used to evaluate the ultimate resistance of high-strength bolts with different bolt grades, bolt diameters, bolt types, hole clearance, and preload force when the bolts are exposed to combined tensile-shear loading. The simulation results are compared to existing design specifications. Finally, the formula modifications in the existing design standards are proposed based on statistical analysis on numerical parametric results.

Resilience assessment and management of technical systems have been increasingly important as the current applications in the process industries are becoming more complex. Several review papers on resilience management methods and applications have been published by researchers from different aspects. However, none of them put the focus on bibliometric analysis of the relevant research works especially those in the process industries. This study pays attention to system resilience assessment and management, by reviewing sources of relevant publications, collaboration of institutions and authors, and development trends. In addition, the development of resilience engineering and management is further investigated through analyzing the most influential and relevant journals of process safety and environmental protection. This review provides valuable information regarding knowledge structure, evolution and influential publications, and high-level insights for future research.@en

Microwave-optics entanglement is a vital component for building hybrid quantum networks. Here, a new mechanism for preparing stationary entanglement between microwave and optical cavity fields in a cavity optomagnomechanical system is proposed. It consists of a magnon mode in a ferrimagnetic crystal that couples directly to a microwave cavity mode via the magnetic dipole interaction and indirectly to an optical cavity through the deformation displacement of the crystal. The mechanical displacement is induced by the magnetostrictive force and coupled to the optical cavity via radiation pressure. Both the opto- and magnomechanical couplings are dispersive. Magnon–phonon entanglement is created via magnomechanical parametric down-conversion, which is further distributed to optical and microwave photons via simultaneous optomechanical beamsplitter interaction and electromagnonic state-swap interaction, yielding stationary microwave-optics entanglement. The microwave-optics entanglement is robust against thermal noise, which will find broad potential applications in quantum networks and quantum information processing with hybrid quantum systems.

Virtual reality (VR) is the experience in a simulated interactive virtual space. It provides synthetic sensory feedback to users' actions that can physically and mentally immerse the users. Social VR is one type of VR system that allows multiple users to join a collaborative virtual environment and communicate with each other, usually by means of visual and audio cues. The virtual space can be a computer-generated 3D scene or a 360° scene captured by an omnidirectional camera. Each user is represented as a computer-generated avatar or using a virtual representation based on live capture. Social VR has shown to be a promising solution to enrich remote communication experiences in the face of increasing pressures to reduce travel and work remotely. In this chapter, we will showcase the design, implementation, and real-world deployment of a series of social VR applications, which are developed for immersive interactive communication and collaboration for multiple domains (e.g., healthcare, cultural heritage). Moreover, we discuss the experimental protocols for evaluating user experiences in this new medium.

High strength bolts are widely used in the engineering field due to their good compressive properties. Accurate assessment of the ultimate capacity performance of high strength bolts under combined loading is essential to ensure the safety of steel structures in the connection zone. Existing studies are not sufficiently clear on the economic and condition-specific limits on the effects of various factors on high-strength bolts under complex stress conditions. In response to these problems, the aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of different factors on the load-bearing performance of high-strength bolts on the basis of numerical simulations. The mesoscale critical plastic strain (MCEPS) method was used on the model fracture and the accuracy of the model evaluation was verified. The effects of grade, type, diameter and bolt hole clearance on the ductile fracture behaviour of high-strength bolts were investigated. It was found that fully threaded bolts and through-hole clearances can mainly affect the load-bearing properties of high-strength bolts and increase the bolt's fracture-deformation capacity. The load-bearing performance of high-strength bolts under the influence of different factors was also compared with the Eurocode design (EC3) predictions.

Social VR enables people to interact over distance with others in real-time. It allows remote people, typically represented as avatars, to communicate and perform activities together in a shared virtual environment, extending the capabilities of traditional social platforms like Facebook and Netflix. This paper explores the benefits and drawbacks provided by a lightweight and low-cost Social VR platform (SocialVR), in which users are captured by several cameras and reconstructed in real-time. In particular, the paper contributes with (1) the design and evaluation of an experimental protocol for Social VR experiences; (2) the report of a production workflow for this new type of media experiences; and (3) the results of experiments with both end-users (N = 15 pairs) and professionals (N = 22 companies) to evaluate the potential of the SocialVR platform. Results from the questionnaires and semi-structured interviews show that end-users rated positively towards the experiences provided by the SocialVR platform, which enabled them to sense emotions and communicate effortlessly. End-users perceived the photo-realistic experience of SocialVR similar to face-to-face scenarios and appreciated this new creative medium. From a commercial perspective, professionals confirmed the potential of this communication medium and encourage further research for the adoption of the platform in the commercial landscape.

Safety management systems (SMSs) are widely applied across many industrial sectors, and a large body of literature has been published addressing their design, implementation, effectiveness, and associated challenges. This article presents a high-level analysis of the SMS research domain, guided by a set of questions addressing the contents, structure, and evolution the research domain, its dominant themes and focus topics, the key scientific domains and journals contributing to its development, and the key publications serving as an intellectual basis for SMS related research. The results show a rapidly increasing volume of research outputs and a shift from research based in North America and Europe to Asia and Australia. There is only a limited number of institutions enduringly contributing to the field, and there are relatively few stable research collaborations, with the number of Chinese institutions publishing SMS related research fast expanding in recent years. The domain is strongly interdisciplinary and embedded in applied domains of science, with industrial engineering the most contributing category, as well as categories focusing on the industrial application domains. A temporal evolution of the research activity in different application domains is apparent, with an initial focus on occupational health and safety, followed by process safety, patient safety, food safety, and construction safety. SMS research has a strong relation to safety culture and safety climate research, and while safety and risk management concepts and theories form an important knowledge base for most application domains, the dominant views on accident causation differ between these. Research on SMS in the food industry is relatively separated from the other application domains. Based on the findings, various future research directions are discussed.@en

Artistic co-creation empowers communities to shape their narratives, however HCI research does not support this multifaceted discussion and reflection process. In the context of community opera, we consider how to support co-creation through the design, implementation, and initial evaluation of the Co-Creation Space (CCS) to help community artists 1) generate raw artistic ideas, and 2) discuss and reflect on the shared meaning of those ideas. This work describes our user-centered process to gather requirements and design the tool, and validates its' usability with 6 community opera participants. Our findings support the value of our tool for group discussion and personal reflection during the creative process.

This article presents a bibliometric analysis and mapping of the Chinese process safety research, focusing on the contributions made in core process safety journals and on the influences of international collaborations and knowledge sources on the developments of this research domain. Collaboration networks, term co-occurrence networks, and co-citation network were analyzed to identify trends, patterns, and the knowledge distribution of the Chinese research on process safety. Work to data has been clustered mainly on safety of chemical processes, fire and explosion, and risk management and accidents. Chinese research contributions are concentrated in only few journals, while the corresponding intellectual base draws on the wider literature focused on understanding and modeling phenomena, and on the broader risk research literature, although to a lesser extent. While various foreign authors are highly cited by Chinese authors, only very few direct collaborations with international scholars are identified. The results are used as a basis for a discussion on future research directions and developments for the community. Increased focus on uncertainty treatment and handling of black swan events, risk evaluation and economic aspects of safety decisions, interorganizational risk management, road and maritime transport of hazardous substances, risk perception and communication, and integrated safety and security assessment, are highlighted as fruitful directions for future scholarship. It is hoped that the insights obtained from this work can facilitate new and consolidated collaborations, as well as further invigorate the Chinese process safety domain, ultimately contributing to improved safety performance of process industries in China and elsewhere.@en

Cake customization services allow clients to collaboratively personalize cakes with pastry chefs. However, remote (e.g., email) and in-person co-design sessions are prone to miscommunication, due to natural restrictions in visualizing cake size, decoration, and celebration context. This paper presents the design, implementation, and expert evaluation of a social VR application (CakeVR) that allows a client to remotely co-design cakes with a pastry chef, through real-time realistic 3D visualizations. Drawing on expert semi-structured interviews (4 clients, 5 pastry chefs), we distill and incorporate 8 design requirements into our CakeVR prototype. We evaluate CakeVR with 10 experts (6 clients, 4 pastry chefs) using cognitive walkthroughs, and fnd that it supports ideation and decision making through intuitive size manipulation, color/favor selection, decoration design, and custom celebration theme ftting. Our fndings provide recommendations for enabling co-design in social VR and highlight CakeVR's potential to transform product design communication through remote interactive and immersive co-design.

In 2017, the Journal of Integrated Security Science was founded at the Safety and Security Science section at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. Now, in 2021, we are happy to announce that we are rebranding the journal by taking it into an adjusted thematic and theoretical avenue: with a new journal name, a revised scope and updated editorial board, we aim for the journal to become an established value within the field of security and safety science, that guarantees high quality standards. In this editorial, we will elaborate upon the implemented changes, and our goals for the future.@en

Scientometrics analysis is increasingly applied across scientific domains to gain quantitative insights in the development of research on particular (sub-)domains of scientific inquiry. By visualizing metrics containing quantitative information about such a domain, scientometric mapping allows researchers to gain insights in aspects thereof. Methods have been developed to answer specific research questions, focusing e.g. on collaboration networks, thematic research clusters, historic evolution patterns, and trends in topics addressed. Several articles applying scientometric mapping to safety-related topics have been published. In context of the Special Issue ‘Mapping Safety Science – Reviewing Safety Research’, this article first reviews these, and subsequently provides an overview of key concepts, methods, and tools for scientometric mapping. Data sources and freely available tools are introduced, focusing on which research questions these are suited to answer. A brief tutorial-style description of a scientometrics research process is provided, guiding researchers new to this method how to engage with it. Finally, a discussion on best practices in scientometric mapping research is made, focusing on how to obtain reliable and valid results, and how to use the scientometric maps to gain meaningful insights. It is hoped that this work can advance the application of scientometric research within the safety science community.

This paper presents a bibliometric overview of the publications in the principal international journal Process Safety and Environmental Protection (PSEP) from 1990 to 2020 retrieved in the Web of Science (WoS) database to explore the evolution in safety and environmental engineering design and practice, as well as experimental or theoretical innovative research. Therefore, based on the WoS database and the visualization of similarities (VOS) viewer software, the bibliometric analysis and scientometric mapping of the literature have been performed from the perspectives of doc-ument types, publication and citation distribution over time, leading authors, countries (regions), institutions, the corresponding collaboration networks, most cited publications and references, fo-cused research fields and topics, research trend evolution over time, etc. The paper provides a comprehensive and quantitative overview and significant picture representation for the journal’s leading and evolutionary trends by employing specific aforementioned bibliometric analysis factors. In addition, by reviewing the evolutionary trends of the journal and the proposed investigated factors, such as the influential works, main research topics, and the research frontiers, this paper reveals the scientific literature production’s main research objectives and directions that could be addressed and explored in future studies.

Safety and security are often considered in complimentary or opposing terms. Discussions on their conceptual meaning have been put forward, and calls for an increased integration of these domains have been made. Nevertheless, there is currently no high-level empirical comparison of the development and contents of these research domains. In this article, the broad scientific literature of safety and security research obtained from Web of Science is analysed, aiming to obtain comparative insights in these respective fields, with a specific focus on the themes, topics and scientific areas where increased integration can be fruitful. Scientific publications are analysed in terms of research trends and geographic distribution, journals’ distribution, scientific categories, and focus topics of safety and security research in 2019. The results indicate a rapidly growing publication trend in both research domains, with an exponential growth since the 1990s. Safety research focuses on medicine/drug safety, patient safety and disease-related safety, with occupational health and safety and safety in socio-technical systems comparatively smaller research domains. Security research focuses on internet of things, physical layer security and cybersecurity/information security. Journals and scientific categories where significant contributions to both safety and security research are made relate mostly to industrial and transport safety and security, food safety, and public, environmental and occupational health. Apart from providing insights to academics and practitioners to the scope and focus areas of safety and security research, the findings also support delineating the scope and focus of the Journal of Integrated Security and Safety Science (JISSS), which aims to bolster connections and integration between these domains. Based on the findings, a focus on safety and security in industrial plants, transportation contexts, and industrially relevant aspects of public, environmental and occupational health, is found to be an appropriate target area for JISSS.@en

We are facing increasingly pressure on reducing travel and working remotely. Tools that support effective remote communication and collaboration are much needed. Social Virtual Reality (VR) is an emerging medium, which invites multiple users to join a collaborative virtual environment (VE) and has the potential to support remote communication in a natural and immersive way. We successfully organized a CHI 2020 Social VR workshop virtually on Mozilla Hubs, which invited researchers and practitioners to have a fruitful discussion over user representations and ethics, evaluation methods, and interaction techniques for social VR as an emerging immersive remote communication tool. In this CHI 2021 virtual workshop, we would like to organize it again on Mozilla Hubs, continuing the discussion about proxemics, social cues and VE designs, which were identified as important aspects for social VR communication in our CHI 2020 workshop.

Over the last decades, process safety has been an important area of academic inquiry, aiming to build knowledge which can contribute to reduce the occurrence of industrial accidents in the process and chemical industries, or to mitigate their consequences. Knowledge in this interdisciplinary research domain is created using applied science, engineering, organizational, and social science approaches. This article provides a retrospective overview of the process safety research field, through the lens of three major journals contributing to the development of this knowledge domain: Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries, Process Safety and Environmental Protection, and Process Safety Progress. An analysis of the articles in these journals, published between 1999 and 2018, provides insights in the structure, developments, trends, and highly influential works in this research domain, while revealing differences and similarities between these three core process safety journals. General publication trends, the geographic distribution of leading knowledge producers (countries/regions and institutions), their collaboration and temporal evolution patterns, topic clusters and emerging trends, and highly cited sources and articles, are identified and discussed.

OD flows provide important information for traffic management and planning. The prediction of dynamic OD matrices gives the possibility to apply anticipatory traffic management measures. In this paper, we propose an OD prediction approach based on the data obtained by Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. The principal component analysis (PCA) is applied to reduce the dimension of the original OD matrices and to separate the main structure patterns from the noisier components. A state-space model is established for the main structure patterns and the structure deviations, and is incorporated in the Kalman filter framework to make predictions. We further propose three K-Nearest Neighbour (K-NN) based long-term pattern recognition approaches. The proposed approaches are validated with field ANPR data from Changsha city, P.R. China. The results show that the observed OD flows can be accurately predicted by our proposed approaches. Which prediction method performs best depends on the quality of the available data: for regular, periodic OD matrices the Kalman filter is better, for irregular OD matrices the pattern recognition that looks at different time periods in the historical data, gives better results.@en

Social Virtual Reality (VR) invites multiple users to "interact" in a shared immersive environment, which creates new opportunities for remote communication, and can potentially be a new tool for remote medical consultations. Using knee osteoarthritis consultation as a use case, this paper presents a social VR clinic that allows patients to consult a nurse represented as a virtual avatar with head, upper body and hands visible. We started with an ethnographic study at a hospital with three medical professionals and observed three patient consultation sessions to map the patient treatment journey (PTJ) and distill design requirements for social VR consultation. Based on the results of the study, we designed and implemented a social VR clinic to meet the identified requirements. Our work expands on the potential of social VR to help reshape patient treatment by reducing the workload of medical staff and the travel time of patients. In the future, we plan to conduct user studies to compare face-to-face (F2F) with social VR consultations.
