We report on a method that allows microscopic image reconstruction from extreme-ultraviolet diffraction patterns without the need for object support constraints or other prior knowledge about the object structure. This is achieved by introducing additional diversity through rotation of an object in a rotationally asymmetric probe beam, produced by the spatial interference between two phase-coherent high-harmonic beams. With this rotational diffractive shearing interferometry method, we demonstrate robust image reconstruction of microscopic objects at wavelengths around 30 nm, using images recorded at only three to five different object rotations.

This paper presents an analysis of the ionospheric corrections required to get a significant improvement in PPP-RTK performance. The main aim was to determine the improvement in the position precision and Time-To-First-Fix in the PPP-RTK user side using ionospheric corrections computed from a network. The study consists of two main steps. The first one includes an empirical investigation of the ionosphere model precision necessary to greatly improve the PPP-RTK performance in a simulated environment in terms of precision and convergence time. In the second one, an optimal ionosphere representation was developed to provide precise ionospheric corrections by parameterizing the ionospheric slant delays after the PPP-RTK network processing in terms of ionosphere model coefficients and differential code biases using real GNSS measurements. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed methodology can be used for reliable regional ionosphere modeling and satellite code bias estimation, due to the consistency of the satellite code bias estimates with those provided from the International GNSS Service Analysis Centres, the high stability of the estimated receiver and satellite code biases and the low least-squares residuals of the network-based ionosphere modeling solution. Finally, it has been shown that the precision of ionospheric corrections at zenith needs to be better than 5 cm to enable faster PPP-RTK solutions.@en

After a previous review of the grain-size characteristics of in situ (primary) fine-grained aeolian deposits, reworked (secondary) aeolian deposits, as modified in lacustrine environments and by alluvial and pedogenic processes, are discussed in this paper. As a reference, the grain-size characteristics of primary loess deposits are shortly described. Commonly, pedogenesis and weathering of primary loess may lead to clay neoformation and thus to an enrichment in grain diameters of 4–8 μm, a size which is comparable to the fine background loess. Remarkably, the modal grain-size values of primary loess are preserved after re-deposition in lakes and floodplains. But, secondary lacustrine settings show a very characteristic admixture with a clayey population of 1–2,5 μm diameter due to the process of settling in standing water. Similarly, alluvial settings show often an addition with coarse-grained sediment supplied by previously eroded sediment. However, floodplain settings show also often the presence of pools and other depressions which behave similarly to lacustrine environments. As a result, alluvial secondary loess sediments are characterized by the poorest grain-size sorting when compared with the other secondary loess and primary loess. Despite the characteristic texture of each of these deposits, grain-size characteristics of the described individual sediment categories are not always fully diagnostic and thus grain-size analysis should be complemented by other information, as sedimentary structures and fauna or flora, to reliably reconstruct the sedimentary processes and environments.

TEMPO was selected in 2012 by NASA as the first Earth Venture Instrument, for launch between 2018 and 2021. It will measure atmospheric pollution for greater North America from space using ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy. TEMPO observes from Mexico City, Cuba, and the Bahamas to the Canadian oil sands, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific, hourly and at high spatial resolution (~2.1 km N/S×4.4 km E/W at 36.5°N, 100°W). TEMPO provides a tropospheric measurement suite that includes the key elements of tropospheric air pollution chemistry, as well as contributing to carbon cycle knowledge. Measurements are made hourly from geostationary (GEO) orbit, to capture the high variability present in the diurnal cycle of emissions and chemistry that are unobservable from current low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that measure once per day. The small product spatial footprint resolves pollution sources at sub-urban scale. Together, this temporal and spatial resolution improves emission inventories, monitors population exposure, and enables effective emission-control strategies. TEMPO takes advantage of a commercial GEO host spacecraft to provide a modest cost mission that measures the spectra required to retrieve ozone (O₃), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), formaldehyde (H₂CO), glyoxal (C₂H₂O₂), bromine monoxide (BrO), IO (iodine monoxide), water vapor, aerosols, cloud parameters, ultraviolet radiation, and foliage properties. TEMPO thus measures the major elements, directly or by proxy, in the tropospheric O₃ chemistry cycle. Multi-spectral observations provide sensitivity to O₃ in the lowermost troposphere, substantially reducing uncertainty in air quality predictions. TEMPO quantifies and tracks the evolution of aerosol loading. It provides these near-real-time air quality products that will be made publicly available. TEMPO will launch at a prime time to be the North American component of the global geostationary constellation of pollution monitoring together with the European Sentinel-4 (S4) and Korean Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) instruments.

A dynamic positioning machine for nanoscale engineering has been developed. The system comprises of a 2 DOF long range translation stage carrying a 6 DOF shorte tange stage. The long range stage can travese an area of 50 mmx50 mm while the shorte range stage can provide up to 17 micrometers of linear positioning and 160x10-6 radians of angular motion to compensate errors generated by the long range stage during traverses. Currently, positioning of the x- and y-axis along with angular motion about the z-axis is monitored by laser inerferometers, while positioning of the z-axis and angular motion of x- and y-axis are monitored by 3 capacitance gages.@en
